Monday's Matter FHE: Somebody Needs an N - A - P...

At our house, and millions of others around the globe, Monday nights are reserved for family.  A Family Home evening full of fun songs, spiritual lessons and memories!

Have you ever dealt with a cranky, tired, crying spouse child and just wanted to cry yourself?

This has happened to us a few times in our life.  ;)

The Aussie is really good at making up lyrics for songs on the fly, so he came up with this little ditty that we would sing at the top of our lungs when the cranky crying started.  To which, one of my nieces would always shout, "I'm not a PERSON!!" and then she would fall asleep.

Sung to the tune of "The Wheels on the Bus"

Somebody needs an N....A....P

N....A...P

N...A...P

Somebody needs an N...A...P

And that person is _________ (fill in the blank with the name of the cranky person.  Try and sing the name in THREE syllables)

Anyway, this song brings me to the lesson for tonight from July 2015 Ensign about SLEEP!

I'd like to **yawn** welcome everyone out to Family Home Evening!

{Opening Song} Albuquerque Turkey

Albuquerque is a turkey,
and he's feathered and he's fine.
And he wobbles, and he gobbles
And he's absolutely mine.

He's the best pet
That you can get
Better than a dog or cat
He's my Albuquerque Turkey
And I'm mighty proud of that!!

(Sung to the tune of My Darling Clementine)

{Opening Prayer} Yawn.  That's right give a big, ol' yawn.  The first one to yawn along gets to say the prayer!

{Lesson}
This lesson is taken from the July 2015 Ensign Article "Filled with Life and Energy"

Let's play a game of "Who Wants"... Please feel free to throw in any other crazy questions to get everyone laughing.

Raise your hand to answer yes.

  • Who wants...to be healthier? (Me!)
  • Who wants...to have more energy?  (Yes!  Please!)
  • Who wants...more homework?  (Pst.  It's a trick!  Don't raise your hand!!)
  • Who wants...to be more inspired?  (I do!!)
If I told you changing ONE thing in your life could help you with all of these things (and maybe even help you with your homework too), what do you think that one thing might be?

I'll give you a hint:

Genesis 19:27
Exodus 34:4
Joshua 6:12
Mark 1:35
John 20:1

Still stumped?  Well, one of our Founding Father's, Benjamin Franklin, said the "key" to life was...

That's right!  Going to bed EARLY and getting up EARLY!

Did you know?
"The average age of a chief executive officer in America is 55 years old.4 Would it surprise you to discover that the CEO of an international organization was a 97-year-old man? What if you also learned that he still traveled the world giving speeches, training leaders, meeting with government officials, and being interviewed by major media organizations at this advanced age? What if his two top VPs were very active 79- and 87-year-olds? And yet that was exactly the situation toward the end of the administration of President Gordon B. Hinckley (1910–2008) as President of the LDS Church."

In fact:

"Great leaders in our day also use the early-morning hours to receive revelation. Some time ago I heard a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy mention in a stake conference talk that he was an early riser. After the meeting, I spoke to him briefly about his early-morning ritual, then asked how many of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve kept a similar schedule. He replied, “They all do!”"

What blessings can come from going to bed early and ceasing to sleep longer than is needful? (make your own list or scan the Ensign article for answers, see link at the Lesson section of this page)

  • Studies have shown links between early risers and higher GPAs
  • It is easier to received inspiration in the early morning hours
  • Much more can be accomplished in the early morning hours of the day
  • The world is more beautiful in the quiet morning hours
  • Keeping an early schedule can help emotional, mental and physical health
So, when life is raging around you and you cannot find peace remember to put it to the test:  Try it for 3 days.  Go to bed early and wake up early! See what a difference it can make.

"The benefits of this self-discipline far exceed the effort required. When we win the first battle of the day against the mattress, we are far more likely to win more battles during the day. We are also more likely to be filled with life and energy."

{Closing Prayer} Yawn.  Do it again and see if you can catch anyone.  If not, you're up to bat.

{Activity} S'nores Dip!

It's exactly like S'mores but I changed the "M" to an "N" so it sounds like Snores.  What do you want?  I'm tired!

You can get the recipe HERE at Hungry Brownie

Also, take a look at this clip from America's Funniest Home Videos showing funny sleepers...
