Monday's Matter FHE: Families Are Super!

At our home and millions of others around the globe Monday nights are reserved for family.  A Family Home Evening (FHE) where we get to know each other better.  A special time set aside just for family.

That has what has been weighing on my heart lately.

Particularly the joy that comes from visiting with and getting to know extended family better. Love is truly spelled T. I. M. E.

We have made a conscious effort during out married life to cherish and strengthen our relationships with our extended family.  From Sunday visits to my husband's father, to 16 hour car trips to his brother's house for Thanksgiving, and 2 days of driving to visit a sister for just one day before having to turn around and drive home for work.  We have tried to go out and meet relatives whenever they have been within driving distance.  We have planned and scheduled vacation time so that it included family time and trips together to visit both sides.  We have driven across multiple states for cousins weddings and for grandparents funerals.  We even visit and place flowers on his parents graves.  We have not been able to see everyone but we hope to be able to visit with you all soon.  Each moment spent with you is precious to us!  Still, these relationships always need more of our time and as important as they are we try and sacrifice our time to hold them close and knit our hearts with theirs.

And you know what?  It has been and will be worth every bit of sacrifice for they are what matters most!

The purpose of tonight's lesson is to help us develop a greater appreciation and love for our extended family members and to take steps to strengthen those ties that bind us.  Because families are SUPER!

So, tonight, I would like to welcome everyone out to Family Home Evening.  Really.  Welcome!

{Opening Prayer}

{Lesson Materials}

Pictures of extended family members as many as you can or want to gather.

Paper and Pencil for everyone who can write.

Display several photos of extended family members. Ask who they are and tell each ones name.
1- Are Grandmas and Grandpas important?
2- Are Aunts and Uncles important?
3- What about nieces, nephews and cousins?
Play a memory game. Place all of the pictures out on the floor. Have everyone close their eyes or leave the room. Remove one of the pictures. When they come back or open their eyes, they will need to figure out what family member is missing. (This little gem is from LDS Daily)
Pass out paper and pencils.  Have everyone compile a list of extended family members (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins).
Why is the immediate family important?
Read Ephesians 6: 1-4
Why are family relationships important?
Discuss Malachi 4: 6
Do you know all of your aunts and uncles? cousins? grandparents?
How many uncles do you have?
How many aunts?
Which ones are on your father’s side and which ones are  on your mother’s side?
Whom ever has the most family members on their list gets extra treats!!
